Valparaiso is a major city in Chile, being one of the biggest seaports of the country.

It lies on the south side of a broad open bay of the Pacific Ocean, which is 84 miles(140 km) northwest of the capital, Santiago.

Historic buildings have survived a succession of pirate raids, severe storms, fires, and earthquakes. Much of the city was rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1906 took place on the night of August 16, this earthquake had a magnitude of 8.2 Mw30 and destroyed almost completely Chile’s first port and second most important city.
